New ECW Mockup 2005-01-09

Posted by Peter Kirby at 11:33 PM | Permalink

I have made several changes to the template for the redesign of my site, and I now am showing the new mockup for a normal document page. Instead of commenting on the changes I made, I would rather have people visit the mockup page and ask the questions, "Do I know what this thing does? Is it done in the most comprehensible and aesthetic way?" Also, ask yourself how you might do certain tasks and what kind of behavior you expect. For example, there is now just a textbox and a button called "Search" at the top of the page. What exactly do you think should happen when executing the search?

I greatly appreciate your feedback.

best,
Peter Kirby

On a quick look - it's almost bedtime here - it's a nice clean design and seems self explanatory, though I half expected the timeline thing to be clickable (being up there at the top like that).

I think you'll need to put some padding between the wooden frame and the text; there's too little space between them.

Also, since so many of the dates are approximate, the relative order between items is almost arbitrary. That's not so bad when all the texts are listed, but a little confusing when only the "previous" and the "next" texts are presented.

Peter your work is very pleasing aesthetically. My suggestion would be limited to the box on the upper right where you summarize the contents of the page (I presume). Will those items be "clickable"? It might be useful if they are. For instance- you have "Genre: Gospel". If gospel were linked to a definition the page would be greatly enhanced. Likewise if you offered links to the "ancient translations".

Apart from general agreement with Stephen Carlson's comment, I'd add that with the general use of brown on the site, the blue of the links clashes rather than stands out. I know there's a school of thought that argues for standard hyperlinks, but I think there's more room to change the style to blend well with the site.
Overall though, I find the new appearance a great improvement on the old. Keep tinkering with it, but go with the new design.

I just found your interesting web site. I actually prefer the existing format to the one proposed.
